Hey everyone – I’m Steve, the founder of Crushing Security, and I’m excited to connect with you - whether you’re experienced in cybersecurity or just beginning to explore.
My Journey: My cybersecurity path mainly began when I started Plymouth University, but it wasn’t a simple, straightforward route to get there. Initially, I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life. I dropped out of a computing course at 16, tried various jobs like warehouse work, retail, and window fitting, and even tried a plumbing course (which didn’t last long!). Technology was always my stronger area. I returned to that computing course, better prepared this time, and passed with a distinction. This helped me earn a place on the Cybersecurity degree at Plymouth University, where I graduated with a first-class honours degree in 2018.
Since then, I’ve worked with both large corporations and startups. I’ve achieved certifications such as CEH (Certified Ethical Hacking), GIAC (SANS Cloud Penetration Testing), and OSCP (Offensive Security Certified Professional).
Day-to-Day Work Stuff: Most days, I’m tracking down cyber threats and learning new ways to spot them. This mainly involves building detections to alert on suspicious behaviour across organisations, creating tools to support analysts, handling cybersecurity incidents, and proactively searching for anything unusual. I also help, mentor and coach others in the cybersecurity industry.
Life Outside Work: I love spending time with my family (I currently have a 4-year-old son), exploring new places, and staying fit—enjoying the simple things! Growing up with little, this career has been quite life-changing, allowing me to do things I didn’t grow up having, such as funding nice holidays, enjoying good food, supporting my loved ones and more. This has also inspired me to share my knowledge and experience to help others where I can.
Crushing Security And The Vision: I started Crushing Security so we can not only help ourselves but also change how people see cybersecurity, going beyond the tech to focus on things that impact our actual lives (positively or negatively). The best way to protect ourselves is to connect with others, share knowledge, and stay ahead of the new attacks being performed. Here at Crushing Security, I’m looking to have a central hub we can collaborate in, and eventually grow this into something that will benefit all of us!
